Langen Motorcycles are an automotive engineering and development company engaged in the design and manufacture of their own brand of bespoke high-end motorcycles. Based in Manchester and founded by Christofer Ratcliffe in 2018, Langen’s evolution and growth, working with industry giants such as Triumph and McLaren has secured their position as prestigious motorcycle manufacturers. Each motorcycle is hand crafted with detail and innovations that feature the best of British engineering.
CAI were contacted by Langen in the spring of 2023, and commissioned to create a bespoke gauge for their new creation ‘The LightSpeed‘; a V-Twin 1190 cc generating 185 HP bespoke motorcycle. The brief was to design a CAN enabled dual Speedometer and Tachometer that should accent features from the overall design of the LightSpeed.
Langen engineer, Osian Flowers worked with our head of design, Dave Belton on this project. Together, they conceived a unique single instrument with a dual concentric stepper motor indicating road speed and engine speed within the confines of an 80mm dial. The first visual prototype was installed and featured at the LightSpeed’s debut at the NEC’s ‘Motorcycle live’ show in November 2023
The design features a machined billet case and bezel, black dial and features the hallmark of the ‘LightSpeed’; a helix which also features on the exhaust pipe and the rear lighting. The central embellishment features the Langen logo.
This project was an exciting venture for CAI and allowed us to showcase our unique design capabilities and innovative automotive instrumentation. The unique feature of the bezel; the helix, allowed us to push our design and machining skills to a new level. We look forward to supporting Langen Motorcycles in developing future projects.
