Bespoke Mini SMITHS Gauge Faces
Owners of the classic Mini can now have a SMITHS Speedometer with a bespoke face design. In true patriotic spirit, one of the first features the Union Jack, the national flag of the United Kingdom.
The Mini has featured SMITHS-branded instruments since the British Motor Corporation (BMC) launched the car in April 1959.
Presently, SMITHS-branded gauges are manufactured by Caerbont Automotive Instruments (CAI) at their facility in Abercrave near Swansea in South Wales. The team of engineers still use the original SMITHS drawings, manufacturing instructions, jigs and fixtures.
As well as the original mechanical gauges, the CAI team has developed a new updated range of digital instruments for the classic Mini. These include the SMITHS classic Mk II Mini Digital OLED Speedometer (90 mph) with both a black and magnolia face. The range also includes clocks, gauges for the Mini Cooper, and a maximum hand Tachometer fitted to original sporty Mini cars.

Investment in modern printing equipment allows CAI to print almost any design onto the gauge face. The customer provides the idea and the CAI engineering team then strive to produce that unique design.
“Modern technology enables us to do something a little bit different,” explained Gavin Roberts, CAI’s Managing Director. “Mini enthusiasts are passionate about their car. We are able to make their Mini even more individual to them. It might only be the face of a speedometer, but the image means something special to the owner.”
